Weekend Home Improvement Projects

Weekend Home Improvement Projects

When the weather begins to cooperate in the spring, many homeowners begin to putter around their homes, finding home improvement projects to try to complete during the course of a weekend. You might already have a list of items to accomplish between now and the end of the summer. If you don’t want to dedicate an entire weekend to upgrading your home, it’s possible to break some of these ideas up over the course of two weekends, by working either two Saturdays or two Sundays. Another option is to wait for a long weekend to come up, and work for two consecutive days, so you’ll still have a free day left. Here are some ideas for home improvement projects that you can accomplish in one or two days:
  • Spruce up the entryway The front walkway is the first thing that visitors to your house will see, and you know that you don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression! Take one day to sweep the walkway and front stoop, wash down the front door, hose out the covered entry, and remove old mulch. If the front of the house is really grimy, you might want to rent a pressure washer. The next day, replace the mulch and plant any annuals that you’d like to put in. You could also repaint the front door, maybe in a bright new color to add some interest. If it needs it, this is also the time to sand and repaint the front porch, though you might want to extend your project to the next weekend if the porch is large or needs planks repaired.
  • Paint your closets Painting your closet might not be something that seems terribly pressing, so it doesn’t get done often. If your closet walls have seen better days, though, then you can accomplish this task in a day or two. First, take everything out of the closets. If you’re splitting this project up over two weeks, do just one at a time. Once everything is removed, wipe down the walls and paint, then allow adequate drying time before placing your belongings back in the closet. If you are having custom closets installed, then paint now; it will be difficult to paint around your new custom closet system once it’s installed. Be sure to leave plenty of time for the paint to dry before your installation appointment!
  • Upgrade your bathroom While you probably won’t be able to decide to upgrade to a marble vanity or install a new bathtub on a whim, you can make your bathroom look and function better over the course of a weekend. On the first day, remove all of the old caulk and re-caulk the spaces around the toilet, tub and shower. If yours was discolored, then this will make a big difference in the way it looks. Another small bathroom project that can be done the same weekend is to tighten up, install or move towel racks and bathrobe hooks. Many homeowners have a loose towel rack, a toilet paper holder that wiggles, or nowhere to hang their bathrobes. Remedy this situation for a few dollars and an hour or two of time, and it will make a big difference in your morning routine!
Many home improvement projects get put off even when they don’t take long or cost very much money at all. Put an end to procrastinating by making a list of projects that you can accomplish in a few hours, and simply assign one to each weekend. By the end of the summer, you’ll feel like you are living in a new house!
